Instructions to persons whose local government pensions for January were paid prematurely

Pensions
Pensions

Local government employee pensions for January were paid prematurely on 17 December 2020. This is why local government pensions will not be paid into accounts on 4 January 2021. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the premature pension payment.

How will the taxation of my pension be affected due to the wrong payment date?

Keva and the Tax Administration have reached a solution regarding pensions that Keva inadvertently paid prematurely.

The error will not affect your taxation for 2020 or 2021. You do not need to contact Keva or the Tax Administration in this regard.

Keva will send a letter about this to all pensioners who received the wrong payment.

When will my pension next be paid?

The next time you receive a local government pension from Keva will be on 3 February 2021.

I was employed by the State, Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bank of Finland or Kela, how will Keva’s mistake affect my pension(s)?

It won’t affect your pension(s) in any way. All other pensions will be paid as planned and notified: Church and Bank of Finland employees’ pensions will be paid on 4 January 2021 and State employees’ pensions on 20 January 2021.

I managed to return my pension, when will I receive my pension for January?

We will pay the pension of persons who have returned the prematurely paid pension on the original pension payment date, 4 January 2021. This affects only a few dozen people.

What will happen to any social assistance I receive if I have received too much pension in 2020? How will Kela react to the fact that I won’t receive a pension in January?

Kela has notified that the mistake does not usually affect basic social assistance. It is possible, however, that the mistake will result in individual customers being eligible to receive social assistance in January.

What will happen to my Kela pension benefits (incl. national pension, guarantee pension and housing allowance for pensioners)?

Kela has notified that the incorrect payment date will not affect Kela benefits such as national pension, guarantee pension or housing allowance for pensioners. Kela’s pension benefits take into account earnings-related pension for the period for which it was granted, In other words, the time of payment of an earnings-related pension does not affect pensions paid by Kela and customers do not need to contact Kela in this respect.

Is the information correct in the annual letter?

The pension amounts notified in the separate annual letter to you are correct.

How will Keva notify customers of the mistake?

Keva will send a letter by post to everyone who has received a wrong payment.

In addition, we have communicated the mistake on our website, in our social media channels and through the media.

When did Keva notice the mistake and why wasn’t it communicated immediately?

We noticed the mistake on the morning of 16 December 2020 and tried immediately to rectify the matter with banks, but regrettably were unable to. Immediately after this, we communicated the incident.

What will Keva do to ensure the mistake isn’t repeated?

We have begun a serious study of what happened and will review our way of working to ensure the incident cannot be repeated.
