Pension accrued abroad is applied for in different ways depending on which country your pension has accrued in.
EU and EEA and social security agreement countries
If applying for a pension from an EU or EEA country or a country which has a social security agreement with Finland, you can apply for the pension from a foreign country through your own earnings-related pension institution in Finland.
You can apply for a pension from abroad at the same time as you apply for a Finnish earnings-related pension if the pensions come into force at the same time.
In addition to the pension application form, fill in the appendix U form, on which you can include more detailed information concerning your work abroad.
The age limits for receiving an old-age pension vary from country to country. Even if you have the right to receive old-age pension in Finland, you may not be granted your pension from abroad at the same time.
Disability pension can be applied for in both Finland and abroad using the same form. Pension rights are, however, dependent on the legislation of the country in which you work so the prerequisites for receiving a disability pension are different depending on the country. If you have the right to disability pension in Finland, you may not have this right abroad.
EU and EEA countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Switzerland has signed a separate agreement concerning social security with the EU.
Finland has a social security agreement with the following countries: Chile, Israel, Canada/Quebec the USA and Australia. In the above-mentioned countries you can apply for your accrued pension in the same way as you would apply for earnings-related pension in Finland and the pension is paid from one country to the other.
Countries outside the EU and EEA
If you have worked in a country other than those mentioned above, the pension accrued abroad may not necessarily be paid to Finland or another EU country.
If the pension can be paid, you need to apply for the pension yourself from the country in question.
