Käsityöläiskatu 18 is a high-standard senior home completed in the summer of 2001. It provides pleasant and active living close to all the services of the city centre.
The flats are designed especially for the living requirements of aging people, taking into account possibilities for moving around: there are as few thresholds as possible, the doorways are sufficiently wide and the bathrooms are exceptionally spacious. The flats are meant for people who manage on their own and are at least 55 years old. The active building committee organises presentations, excursions and parties in the club room and the yard.
The area
The senior home is located in a valued, peaceful area in the Turku city centre, near the railway station and less than a kilometre from the market square. The closest bus stop with connections to the market square and onward to any other district or near-by municipalities is 100 metres away. One of the city’s so-called service-line buses (palvelulinja) makes a stop 200 metres away. All the main sights are practically within walking distance.
Flats and shared areas
The building has eight floors, three staircases and lifts. There are 80 flats in good condition above the street-level business premises. The flats’ floor areas vary between 36.5 m2 and 97 m2 (from 1 room + kitchenette to 4 rooms, kitchen and a large balcony).
The tenants share two spacious sauna facilities, storage for outdoor sports equipment and a laundry drying room equipped with a fan.
A so-called Senior hall is located on the top (9th) floor of the building. It can be rented for family or other festivities, and it includes a sauna, room with a fireplace and a kitchenette. The tenants also have a hobby room and a club and exercise room at their disposal.
The cloistered yard is green and pleasant with plenty of vegetation. In the yard there are benches, a porch swing, a covered barbeque area and swings for children. Parking spaces are for rent in the yard and in the locked cold parking garage (with engine heating) and on the garage’s roof.
Services
All services are close at hand. The distance to the corner shop is less than 100 metres. The closest pharmacy, a private medical centre/hospital and a bank are located on the adjacent block. There are also many specialist businesses in the neighbourhood (hairdressers, cosmetologist, flower shop, lunch cafés).
